New Three-Series Format Brings Fresh Challenge for Teams

The Premier Volleyball League introduced a three-series All-Filipino Conference format spanning seven months before the Philippine Grand Championship. Coaches and players welcomed the changes ahead of the October 10 opening at SM Seaside Cebu Arena.

PVL Introduces Three-Series All-Filipino Format

Justin Valencia of Tiebreaker Times highlighted reactions from volleyball coaches and players during the league’s anniversary press conference. The redesigned All-Filipino Conference features three connected series called Siklab, Sigla, and Sinag, culminating in the Philippine Grand Championship.

Each series will crown its own champion, while results from Siklab and Sigla determine overall standings for Sinag. PLDT head coach Rald Ricafort welcomed the competitive challenge and its potential contribution to Philippine volleyball development.

“Siyempre, challenging po ulit. Knowing na tatlong series yung magiging basis for the Grand Championship. Pero for sure, makakatulong pa rin sa improvement ng volleyball. So, we’re looking forward sa challenges saka sa competition,” Ricafort said.

Cumulative Results Determine Sinag Seeding

Teams will earn standings points based on their final rankings in the first two series of competition. Those accumulated points will establish the overall seedings for Sinag, directly influencing each club’s route toward the championship.

Siklab Requires Coaches to Field Every Player

The opening Siklab series requires teams to give every player declared on their match roster playing time. This all-to-play requirement distinguishes the first phase from conventional matches where coaches determine participation entirely through tactical decisions.

Siklab runs from October 10 through December 4, beginning with a single round-robin elimination phase for participating teams. The second series, Sigla, removes the mandatory participation rule while retaining the same basic competition structure and playoff format.

Sigla Restores Coaches’ Preferred Player Combinations

Without Siklab’s participation requirement, coaches can select their preferred combinations throughout Sigla’s elimination matches and subsequent playoffs. Nxled head coach Ettore Guidetti supported the extended conference structure despite its division into three separate competitive phases.

“In my opinion, the idea of having a long conference is a very good one. It’s a very good one even if it’s split into three different phases,” Guidetti said.

PVL Playoff Format Rewards Higher-Ranked Teams

Siklab and Sigla will each send their four highest-ranked teams into semifinals following their respective round-robin elimination stages. The first seed faces fourth place, while the second seed meets third place, with higher-ranked teams receiving twice-to-beat advantages.

Each series concludes with a best-of-three championship, allowing separate winners to emerge before the final championship phase. Their accumulated standings points will then determine the Sinag rankings, replacing the earlier semifinal qualification pathway with stepladder competition.

Sinag Introduces Stepladder Championship Qualification

The two highest-ranked teams advance directly into best-of-three semifinals, while seven remaining clubs enter the stepladder stage. Seeds seven through nine begin with a round-robin, followed by elimination matches determining the other two semifinalists.

Seven-Month PVL Schedule Tests Player Management

The extended conference requires players to compete across three series rather than pursue one championship through a shorter schedule. Veteran Rachel Anne Daquis identified maintaining player health as an important consideration throughout the league’s redesigned competitive calendar.

Daquis also emphasized approaching the season one series at a time, beginning with the October-to-December Siklab schedule. Her comments reflected the challenges players anticipated before the opening matches, particularly maintaining readiness across several competitive phases.

“Siguro po, as a player, yun nga, sabi nga ng coaches na it’s a very challenging season for us. Unang una, we need to stay healthy for the rest of the series. But yun, one series at a time. And focus muna tayo dun sa October to December,” Daquis said.

Daquis Expects Teams to Arrive Prepared

Daquis expressed excitement about seeing the participating clubs compete and indicated that she expected teams to arrive prepared. Her comments added a player’s perspective to the coaching reactions surrounding the new All-Filipino Conference format.

“And yun, excited naman ako na makita yung mga teams na maglalaro. At alam ko, nakahanda lahat.”

Cebu Opens New PVL All-Filipino Conference

The Siklab series was scheduled to begin October 10 at SM Seaside Cebu Arena during anniversary celebrations. The opening program also featured Spikers’ Turf, bringing women’s and men’s volleyball together for the leagues’ milestone season.

Capital1 and Choco Mucho were scheduled to open the women’s competition at 1 p.m. in Cebu City. Creamline and Akari were assigned the 6 p.m. match, with Savouge facing Alpha Insurance between the women’s contests.

Cebu Hosts Opening Volleyball Tripleheader

Savouge and Alpha Insurance were scheduled for the middle match, highlighting Spikers’ Turf during the joint anniversary celebration. The opening tripleheader placed two PVL fixtures around one men’s volleyball contest at the same Cebu venue.

Analytical Breakdown: Winning Over Seven Months

Siklab’s participation requirement should reward deeper rosters, while forcing coaches to manage substitutions without disrupting established rhythm and chemistry. Sigla will reveal stronger tactical identities because teams can prioritize preferred rotations after gaining valuable information during the opening series. Across seven months, workload management and consistent execution could ultimately separate championship contenders from teams overly dependent on limited rotations.
