Shared PVL Program Draws 13,180 Spectators
Spikers’ Turf shared the Cebu program with the PVL, placing the men’s competition before an announced 13,180 spectators. The record turnout accompanied a five-set opener that ended with Alpha Insurance surviving Savouge in the deciding frame.
Axel Van Book Scores 21 Before Record Cebu Crowd
Axel Van Book scored 21 points for Alpha Insurance while competing before the largest crowd of his young career. The San Beda player acknowledged feeling pressure inside the packed arena, an environment he had never experienced in Manila tournaments.
“There was pressure because this was the first time I had played in front of such a big crowd, with so many people cheering. I’ve never experienced anything like this in tournaments in Manila,” Van Book said in Filipino.
Van Book said players from both teams needed time to adjust after encountering the unfamiliar atmosphere inside the arena. He credited Alpha Insurance’s effort after the Protectors overcame those early nerves and completed their five-set victory over Savouge.
“We felt the pressure at first, but we tried to adjust. It wasn’t just us who were under pressure; our opponents were also playing in this arena for the first time. It was nerve-racking at the beginning, but we fought hard because we couldn’t come here and deliver a poor result.”

Van Book led Alpha Insurance with 21 points while teammate Reymark Betco contributed another 20 during the victory. Their combined production helped the Protectors survive Savouge’s challenge after the match extended into a fifth-set finish.
EJ Casaña Delivers Winning Block for Alpha Insurance
Setter EJ Casaña recorded 24 excellent sets while directing Alpha Insurance’s offense throughout the five-set Invitational Conference opener. Casaña also delivered the game-winning block, securing the Protectors’ 16-14 fifth-set victory before the record Cebu audience.
“At first, I was really excited because men’s volleyball is finally getting the chance to be noticed. We’re very grateful for this opportunity,” Casaña said.
The attention surrounding the event included a planned live interview, which Casaña declined temporarily to maintain his match concentration. He later thanked the Cebu supporters while expressing hope that similar opportunities for men’s volleyball would continue beyond the opener.
“I was supposed to be interviewed live earlier, but I asked if I could focus first because this was an important game. We’re really happy to be here, and we’re grateful to the fans who cheered for us. I hope this continues.”
Setter Records 24 Excellent Sets in Five-Set Victory
Casaña combined 24 excellent sets with the match-winning block as Alpha Insurance completed its five-set victory over Savouge. His final defensive play ended the deciding frame at 16-14 after more than two hours of competition.

Coaches Reflect on Historic Spikers’ Turf Crowd
Alpha Insurance coach Mike Santos described the Cebu attendance as unlike anything he had previously experienced with Spikers’ Turf. Santos also recalled promising a competitive performance against Savouge before both teams eventually played through five demanding sets.
“For the longest time, the Spikers’ Turf has had its share of fans, but never this many. When we walked in earlier, the crowd was overwhelming. It was incredible to see so many people,” Santos said. “At the press conference, I said we would give Savouge a good fight, and I think we delivered a good match against them.”
Savouge coach and owner Sydney Calderon maintained a positive perspective despite her team losing its Invitational Conference opener. She described participating during the shared PVL program as an important experience for Savouge and Philippine men’s volleyball.
“Even though we lost today, we still feel like winners because we got to experience playing in Cebu. Savouge was one of the teams that helped open the Spikers’ Turf during the games between PVL matches, so this is still part of history for us,” Calderon said.
Savouge Values Cebu Experience Despite Opening Loss
Calderon thanked Spikers’ Turf management and Sports Vision for giving men’s teams an opportunity to experience the large Cebu crowd. She acknowledged that players were still adjusting to the environment but expected greater familiarity with similar settings over time.
“I have nothing but gratitude for the Spikers’ Turf management and Sports Vision for giving us this experience. Maybe the men’s teams are just not used to playing in front of such a huge crowd yet, so we were a little overwhelmed. But we’ll get used to it.”
Alyssa Valdez Backs Greater Men’s Volleyball Visibility
Creamline captain Alyssa Valdez has experienced large Philippine volleyball crowds since her collegiate playing career with Ateneo in the UAAP. She later became a prominent figure during the PVL’s growth and several major professional volleyball events in the country.
Valdez welcomed the increased visibility for Spikers’ Turf and described the Cebu event as a timely opportunity for men’s teams. She also expressed hope that the record turnout would lead to continued support beyond the Invitational Conference opener.
“I’m very happy for Philippine volleyball as a whole, but especially for the Spikers’ Turf today. I think this was the right time to introduce the men’s teams to this kind of crowd. We’ve been trying for years to give men’s volleyball more visibility, so hopefully, this is a good start and the support will continue,” Valdez said.
Alpha-Savouge Thriller Lasts More Than Two Hours
Alpha Insurance and Savouge battled for two hours and 16 minutes before Casaña’s block completed the five-set contest. Van Book scored 21 points and Betco added 20 as the Protectors secured their Invitational Conference opening victory.
Analytical Breakdown: The Crowd is Just the Beginning
Record attendance gives Spikers’ Turf valuable exposure, but sustained growth depends on converting first-time spectators into consistent league followers. Players like Van Book and Casaña also benefit because repeated high-pressure environments can strengthen communication, concentration, and late-set decision-making. The shared PVL platform becomes especially valuable when competitive matches create recognizable players, rivalries, and storylines audiences want to follow.
