Fil-Canadian winger Gabriel Obusan commits to UST

After obtaining the six-foot-four Filipino-Canadian winger Gabriel Obusan’s pledge, the University of Santo Tomas continued to bolster its lineup.

The 18-year-old Obusan recently had a spectacular performance in the 2023 NBTC National Championships. He was the Division 1 leader for Toronto and averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.0 steals per game before the team lost to the UST Tiger Cubs in the pool-play elimination round.

Obusan, who graduated from St. Martin’s Catholic School in Ontario, is qualified to play for the Espana-based team for five seasons beginning in Season 86.

The Growling Tigers, according to Obusan, made him feel at home.

“I’ve seen a lot of schools in the UAAP and UST made me feel like a family. I love the people here, I like the way we work here and it really makes me a better player,” Obusan said in a statement. “I just want to make an impact so we can win some games in the UAAP.”

The Fil-Canadian gunner will be a huge asset for the black-and-gold team, according to UST head coach Pido Jarencio.

“Malaking tulong si Obusan sa atin. Malaki ang katawan na kayang makipagbakbakan sa loob at may tira din sa labas. Bagay na bagay siya sa sistemang pinapatakbo natin sa UST,” Jarencio said.

Together with Obusan, UST has also received commitments from James Una of San Sebastian and Rhayyan Amsali of San Beda University.
