Senate Probe Eyes Asian Games Preparation, Athlete Support

Philippine sports officials face a Senate review examining preparation and athlete support following several controversies surrounding the Asian Games. Gilas Pilipinas’ early elimination and reported national-team allowance delays will headline questions despite the country’s historic overall medal haul.

Senate Sets Post-Asian Games Evaluation Hearing

Daily Tribune’s Ivan Suing detailed the inquiry involving officials from the PSC, POC, and various national sports associations. Senate sports committee chairman Christopher Go is scheduled to preside over the public hearing beginning Thursday morning in Pasay City.

Proposed Senate Resolution No. 674 calls for evaluating Team Philippines’ participation and identifying improvements for future international competitions. The inquiry follows a 29-medal campaign featuring four golds, nine silvers, and 16 bronzes for 17th place overall.

Medal Success Does Not Remove Need for Evaluation

A historic medal total can coexist with preparation problems requiring examination before another major international competition begins. Post-event reviews become valuable when officials identify specific failures and translate findings into measurable improvements rather than assigning premature blame.

Gilas Pilipinas Exit Heads Senate Agenda

Gilas Pilipinas entered Nagoya as defending men’s basketball champion but failed to advance after preliminary losses against Bahrain and China. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas selected a roster featuring PBA players without deploying a naturalized player for its title defense.

Go wants basketball officials and other stakeholders to explain the preparation and roster decisions surrounding the unsuccessful campaign. He previously questioned why the federation did not retain more players from the core used during FIBA Asia Cup qualification.

“We want to determine what went wrong, why we were eliminated early, and why the defeat was so decisive.”

“It’s saddening because we were the defending champions—something we fought so hard to reclaim after 62 years—and we know we have what it takes to win again as long as we are properly prepared.”

Roster Decisions Require Context Beyond Final Results

Evaluating Gilas should include player availability, preparation time, roster continuity, coaching plans, and decisions surrounding naturalized-player selection. The early exit deserves scrutiny, but meaningful conclusions require testimony explaining constraints and choices made before the tournament began.

Bagunas Allowance Complaint Raises Support Questions

The inquiry will also examine concerns surrounding financial support after volleyball captain Bryan Bagunas publicly discussed delayed national-team allowances. Reports cited by senators indicated some athletes had borrowed money simply to cover expenses associated with attending regular training sessions.

Senate sports committee vice chairman Joel Villanueva wants explanations from the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine National Volleyball Federation. He cited reports that certain national athletes had received no allowances since July despite continuing their training responsibilities.

“We are hearing that some national athletes have had no allowance since July. No allowance since July.”

“And have had to borrow money just to attend practice.”

Allowance Allegations Need Documentary Answers

The hearing can establish whether payments were delayed, which athletes were affected, and where responsibility for any disruption belonged. Clear timelines and funding records would provide stronger accountability than speculation surrounding claims made immediately after the Asian Games.

Government Sports Funding Faces Closer Examination

Villanueva noted that the PSC received P110.4 million under the 2026 General Appropriations Act for international preparation and participation. That allocation included support connected with Team Philippines’ campaign at the Asian Games and other overseas sporting commitments.

The senator argued that reported allowance problems therefore require an explanation about how available resources reached athletes and federations. Funding totals alone cannot establish whether distribution worked effectively, making implementation another important subject for the scheduled Senate review.

“The gap deserves an explanation.”

“Medals should not be the starting point of support. Support should be the starting point of medals.”

Budget Size Matters Less Without Reliable Delivery

Government appropriations become meaningful to athletes only when funding reaches training programs, competitions, and daily preparation requirements when needed. Any review should therefore examine disbursement procedures alongside total allocations to determine whether administrative systems supported athletes efficiently.

Inquiry Could Shape Future National Team Preparation

The hearing arrives as Philippine sports officials begin shifting attention toward upcoming competitions and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Lessons from Nagoya could influence roster planning, athlete allowances, federation accountability, and government funding procedures during the next competitive cycle.

The country’s 29 medals provide strong evidence of sporting progress, but organizational shortcomings can still undermine future opportunities. Addressing credible preparation and support concerns now could strengthen systems before athletes face another demanding series of international qualification events.

Accountability Should Produce Practical Reforms

Effective oversight should establish facts first, identify specific breakdowns, and assign corrective responsibilities where evidence supports them. Athletes benefit most when hearings lead to reliable allowances, clearer preparation standards, stronger coordination, and transparent use of public resources.

Analytical Breakdown

The 29-medal haul should not shield Philippine sports organizations from examining preparation failures that may have limited individual teams. Gilas’ roster decisions deserve evidence-based review, while delayed allowance allegations raise more fundamental questions about everyday athlete support. The Senate inquiry matters most if documented findings produce reliable systems before another national team encounters the same problems.
