International Experience Gives PVL Players a Competitive Edge

Jia de Guzman believes returning Alas Pilipinas players are raising the PVL’s competitive standard through their growing international experience. Back with Creamline, the veteran setter is applying lessons from Asia’s strongest teams while adjusting again to club competition.

De Guzman Sees Higher Standard Across PVL

Lance D. Agcaoili of INQUIRER.net highlighted De Guzman’s assessment after another international campaign with the Philippine women’s national team. The 31-year-old setter sees stronger domestic competition emerging as internationally experienced players return to their respective PVL clubs.

De Guzman also welcomed another opportunity to play alongside teammates who helped establish Creamline among the league’s leading teams. Her return reunites the veteran setter with familiar teammates after another extended period representing Alas Pilipinas internationally.

Creamline Setter Welcomes Return to Club Competition

De Guzman expressed enthusiasm about the PVL’s competitive level while welcoming her return to familiar teammates at Creamline. The veteran setter has resumed club competition after completing another international campaign with the Philippine women’s national team.

“It’s great. I love the level that we’re playing at,” De Guzman said.

“I love that I’m back home with Creamline. It’s always a joy to play with my teammates again,” she added.

Asian Games Experience Reinforces Basic Skills

De Guzman returned from her second Asian Games appearance after Alas Pilipinas Women finished ninth during the international tournament. Competing against Asian opposition provided another reference point as she evaluated technical differences between international and domestic volleyball.

Rather than emphasizing complicated offensive systems, De Guzman identified fundamental skills as major separators against experienced international opponents. She specifically highlighted serving and reception before explaining how those contacts influence everything that follows during offensive sequences.

De Guzman Highlights Serving and Reception

De Guzman identified serving and reception as essential technical areas after competing against established international opponents with Alas Pilipinas. Her experience reinforced how reliable early contacts establish the foundation before teams can consistently execute their preferred attacking combinations.

“I think one of the most important things in international volleyball is taking care of the basic skills,” she explained. “The attack is the final touch, but the first two touches—the serve and the receive—are given so much importance by our international opponents.”

Creamline Applies International Lessons Against ZUS

De Guzman said Creamline also emphasizes those basic skills because reliable first contacts support the team’s established offensive combinations. She credited her teammates for remaining patient while continuing to develop the technical areas emphasized throughout their preparation.

Creamline recently defeated ZUS Coffee, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24, 25-17, after surviving a difficult finish during the third set. Pangs Panaga scored 15 points while De Guzman recorded 17 excellent sets during the Cool Smashers’ four-set victory.

Panaga and De Guzman Connect in Four-Set Victory

Panaga provided 15 points against ZUS Coffee while De Guzman finished with 17 excellent sets during Creamline’s victory. Their production accompanied another Creamline performance built around the basic skills De Guzman emphasized after returning from international competition.

“That’s something we also emphasize at Creamline because we know we can execute plays, but it becomes much easier to do that when we take care of the basics,” De Guzman said. “Everyone has also been very patient in learning and improving those skills.”

Alas Players Bring International Lessons Back to PVL

De Guzman believes international experience can benefit the league because several Alas Pilipinas players are returning to different PVL clubs. Eya Laure, Bella Belen, and Justine Jazareno are among the national-team players returning to domestic competition after international exposure.

Those players trained together internationally before returning to separate club environments, where they now compete against former national-team teammates. De Guzman sees that crossover as an opportunity for lessons learned internationally to influence competition throughout the domestic league.

National Teammates Return as Club Rivals

De Guzman welcomed the prospect of Alas Pilipinas teammates competing against one another after returning to their respective PVL clubs. She believes broader international exposure can spread stronger standards throughout Philippine volleyball as more domestic players experience international competition.

“It’s great, because I’m not the only one who has been exposed to international volleyball. We have a lot of PVL players who have that experience, too,” De Guzman explained. “It’s fun to watch Alas Pilipinas players challenge one another when they face off in the league.”

“That’s what we want to see—for us to bring what we learn internationally back here. Eventually, the level of Philippine volleyball will improve as more of us gain international exposure.”

All-to-Play Format Tests Creamline’s Setter Depth

De Guzman is also adjusting to the All-Filipino Conference’s all-to-play format while handling Creamline’s different available lineup combinations. The format gives the veteran setter responsibility for connecting effectively with whichever attackers the coaching staff places around her.

Creamline’s roster presents different attacking combinations throughout matches, requiring De Guzman to maintain connections across changing rotations. Her responsibility remains straightforward regardless of personnel: help every teammate selected by the coaches contribute effectively on court.

De Guzman Embraces Responsibility Across Rotations

De Guzman views the setter’s responsibility as making every selected teammate effective regardless of Creamline’s changing lineup combinations. That approach becomes particularly relevant under the all-to-play format as coaches distribute opportunities throughout the available roster.

“Speaking as a setter, whoever our coaches choose to put on the court, it’s our job to make them effective.”

Analytical Breakdown: Stronger PVL Competition Benefits Alas Pilipinas

De Guzman’s emphasis on serving and reception highlights how international experience can strengthen the technical foundation behind successful offensive systems. Returning Alas players can also raise domestic standards by carrying sharper habits, tactical awareness, and competitive expectations into different clubs. Stronger PVL competition then benefits the national program, creating a development cycle where club and international volleyball continuously reinforce each other.
